Wildfire alerts became free

Communikit stopped counting wildfire and evacuation alerts against any community's message allowance, on every plan. The change took effect immediately.

What changed

Wildfire and evacuation alerts sent through Communikit became free of charge. They were no longer counted against a community's SMS or voice allowance, and they carried no overage regardless of how many members were reached or how many times a notice had to be resent.

The change applied on every plan, from the smallest village to the largest county, with no application and no paperwork.

What qualified

Any alert tied to an active fire was covered, from the first advisory through to re-entry.

Wildfire notices, smoke advisories and fire bans
Evacuation alerts, evacuation orders and re-entry notices
Muster point, road closure and shelter information tied to an active fire

Why we changed it

Administrators told us they hesitated before a second or third send during a fast-moving fire because of what it would cost. Nobody should have to do that arithmetic during an evacuation.

Fire conditions change by the hour. Removing the cost meant updates could go out as often as the situation needed them.

Nothing to switch on

The change went live for every community at once. Administrators kept sending wildfire alerts the way they always had, and those alerts no longer appeared on their invoices.
