Miawpukek First Nation
A community app that brings members, news, and resources together.

Miawpukek First Nation is a Mi’kmaq community at Samiajij Miawpukek (Conne River), on Bay d’Espoir on the south coast of Newfoundland. Established in 1987 as the first federal reserve in the province, it has about 3,100 registered members. Roughly 830 live on reserve and more than 2,200 live elsewhere in Newfoundland and across Canada.
With most members living away from Conne River, the Nation needed a way to reach everyone that did not depend on being in the community. Its app, powered by Communikit, brings Chief and Council news, departmental updates, events and documents into one feed, and an urgent notice can reach every member on push, SMS and voice from the same screen.
Explore the app
Updates from Chief and Council, departments and the community calendar land in one feed, so a member in St. John’s or Alberta sees the same notice as a neighbour in Conne River. Events such as the annual powwow, held since 1996, sit in the calendar alongside meetings and program deadlines. Forms are filled in inside the app, so a question to a band office no longer waits for business hours.
An app that feels like Miawpukek First Nation
Members search for Miawpukek First Nation by name and find their own app — the community’s crest on the icon, its colours through every screen, its own language in place of a generic shell.
Administration keeps full control. Staff decide who can post, which groups receive what, and whether a notice goes out as an ordinary update or as a critical alert that bypasses Do Not Disturb. Registered members get a personalised feed and can save the posts that matter to them; everyone else still sees every public notice.
Community news that brings people together
When the Big Bingo fundraiser for Kaden and his family raised $4,600, the thank-you went out as one News post with the full breakdown of bingo and canteen sales. Members in Conne River and those living away saw the same update, and it stayed in the feed for anyone who missed the push notification.
